Yoga: Iyengar, Yin, or Ashtanga?

Kirjoitettu: 6.2.2017 10:54

Yoga is one of my favorite sports. My friends introduced me to yoga about 10 years ago. Even though I’m not practicing it every day, few yoga moves before bedtime really help me relaxing my neck, shoulder, and spine.

There are many different types of yoga, focusing on different aspects. For example, the Iyengar yoga emphasis the posture details and usually uses all kinds of props to assist the posture. Yin yoga has a soft, slow, and meditative style. Postures require less strength but needed to be hold for few minutes. So if you want to try yoga, Yin is a safe starting point. Ashtanga yoga focus a lot on the breathing when posturing. It is more vigorous and powerful when compared to Yin Yoga. Ashtanga yoga is very suitable for male practicers, as it requires also strength, other than pure flexibility.

Ashtanga yoga for beginners is one of the new sykettä classes, twice a week. The schedule of the classes may not be perfect, but the place is great, locating just in the city center. The instructor is very charming. The lesson including 1-hour posture practicing and 15 minutes relaxing. The teacher will help you control your breathe, as the timing of inhale and exhale is closely connected to the postures. There are two male students in the sykattä Ashtanga class and they are doing very well.

Unfortunately, the yoga class is only in Finnish. However, the instructor is very kind, asked me if I understand Finnish, and explained a little in English in the beginning of the class. As I’m familiar with the practice, so Finnish instructions is not a big problem. For absolute beginners unfamiliar with Finnish language, it would be nice to at least google some instructions before going the class to avoid unnecessary muscle injury. But don’t worry too much, yoga is a very safe sport. It suits everyone regardless of ages and gender. It emphasis not the perfect posture at your first try, but the development of yourself when practicing and progressing.
