Introduction to TRE® Tension, Stress, and Trauma Releasing Exercises

TRE® (Tension, Stress, and Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a somatic body based practice method that consists of a few warm-up exercises to activate a neurogenic tremor mechanism in the body to release tension. This technique is a good tool for relaxation and to support recovery from stress.

Alertness and the reactions of fight and flight in stressful situations are automatic mechanisms of the body. As stress levels rise, the body can naturally begin to release excess tension through shaking or vibrating. The TRE® method is based on this: the conscious activation of the physiological tremor mechanism and becoming familiar with it. In this workshop, participants are guided to safely and structuredly explore this physiological process.

We start the workshop with an overview of the theory behind the TRE® method and practise somatic exercises that support self-regulation. Participants are guided to the TRE practice through warm-up exercises and individual exploration of tremouring. Each session ends with a guided relaxation. The course is led by Alli Mattila, a certified TRE® instructor, yoga teacher, and dancer. The instructor's role is to teach the basics of the method and ensure a safe TRE process for the whole group.

To participate in the course, one must be in a stable physical and mental health condition that allows for performing TRE® exercises and participating in group practice. TRE® is not suitable immediately after surgeries or serious illnesses, such as a heart attack or cancer surgery/diagnosis. It is also not recommended for those with epilepsy or serious mental health disorders like psychosis or schizophrenia. It is not recommended to try TRE® stress-releasing exercises for the first time while pregnant.
